Polar bears and pickles – what better combination can there be? We’ve been so excited to pair the two, and we finally found a great reason.
This week we are celebrating International Polar Bear Week! Each year, the first full week in November is dedicated to raising awareness of polar bears around the world. we asked our amazing supporters to help us to purchase some pretty special enrichments for our bears – and here they are, giant pickles!
Historically, the beginning of November marks when sea ice begins to form on the Hudson Bay. This time is critical for polar bears in this area as they have spent the Summer and Fall on land, fasting and awaiting the freeze-up of sea ice. As a result, bears are beginning to congregate on the coast, eagerly awaiting the ice, which they use as a platform to hunt, travel and breed.
We hope you can join us as we will be giving one bear a pickle every day of the week! Visit us in person, or on our webcams. We will also be streaming Polar Bears International’s tundra connections series, and giving you the option to speak with one of our polar bear experts to ask any questions you might have.
Happy International Polar Bear Week!
